Note for PH readers: In Amsterdam, the Swiss photographer Philippe Dudouit has been awarded a 2008 World Press Photo Award in the People in the News category for his series at Time.com on PKK guerrillas hiding out in northern Iraq. I strongly recommend that you check out the link to see this remarkable series. Above, for example, is a photo of a PKK commander in a poplar-choked ravine less than 2 km. from the Turkish border. Note his weapon: a US-made M4 carbine, complete with scope, probably obtained on the black market in Iraq, or possibly from the body of a Turkish commando. The rest of the photos are just as striking. See others from the same series at Mizgin's site: rastibini.blogspot.com.
