Yeah, you got schooled, a bit. But by being honest about your relative positions of authoritativeness, you were leading with your chin.

I just finished my first day of classes: if I survive this month, it should be a fun semester. If I don't, who cares?

Heck, the guy was almost my advisor. I'm under no illusions that I can compete with him on the level of specialized knowledge. But at least he was gracious about it.

Have fun with the semester -- mine's actually been going for a week and a half now, though I still haven't had one of my classes. Having three classes on Thursday and two classes/meetings the next morning is rougher than I expected, but it does make the rest of the week work pretty nicely.
