On tap for today:
Happy Christmas Eve! What's on your mind?
- Former ProgressiveHistorians diarist davidseth has a fabulous piece up at Docudharma on the 1849 Astor Place riot.
- Ari Kelman has definitively convinced me not to vote for Ron Paul. Yglesias has more.
- Our own Cassiodorus cogently explains what's wrong with the Green Party. I disagree with him about the transformative potential of Cynthia McKinney -- Elaine Brown would be a better nominee, in my view -- but other than that he's right on.
Happy Christmas Eve! What's on your mind?

Every time someone talks about a third party it irritates me. Why would one want to splinter a faction off of the Democratic party, FURTHER weakening the left, rather than taking it over from within, as PDA and DFA members are slowly doing across the country?
If we want a progressive party, we already have it. Now we just have to unseat those who came before and sacrificed too much at the altar of big money.
A third party is really the cop out way. It's a way to pick up your balls and play in a smaller pool with all like-minded people. And then, happy in your purity, you still accomplish nothing. Better to work in the mud of the real system so you understand why purity cannot succeed, and then roll up your sleeves to build coalitions, make compromises, but most importantly, get a progressive agenda enacted, bit by bit if necessary. Take the gains and keep building.
