I was just reading sites that were blaming the S and L crisis on the New Deal and Carter. Good to see the distinctions you point out about while Carter was responsible for the 1978 FIR Interest Rate Control Act, Reagan then slashed taxes for the wealthy, reduced regulators, and encouraged the Garn-St. Germain DI Act.
It is important to know history, along with political psychology to see how revisionism works. The bias to the truth reveals the distortions every time.
